Covid information sources

It used to Covid news 24/7 everywhere, but now it’s harder to find out what’s actually going on. Here are a few sources to turn to.

Government

Public Health Ontario is still posting some data weekly, like the wastewater signal, provincially and broken down by region. The notable thing about 2022 is how the wastewater level never gets very low anymore; there’s constantly a lot of Covid infection going on.

I won’t necessarily grab the new graphic weekly, so do go to the link for the latest

Most individual health units still post some stats as well, I think? Waterloo Region’s main page is here; the wastewater data is updated once a week, here.

Scientists

The Canadian COVID-19 Hazard Index: A regularly updated estimate of infection rates, hospitalizations, mortality, vaccination effects, and so on. Assembled by Tara Moriarty, PhD, a professor at University of Toronto, and associates.

Some example data from December 28, 2022:

Canada 7.8 Very High
Covid Hazard Index. On the site, it’s also broken down by province and territory.
Reported deaths, ICU admissions, hospitalizations since Dec 2/21, by age

And on Tara Moriarty’s Tweeter feed, she gives a summary of some key data, such as (for October 21, 2022) that 1 in 36 people in Canada are currently infected.

Bill Comeau’s website. A retired statistician, he provides a lot of useful statics for Ontario, Canada, and the world. Below, for example, is the proof that 2022 is the most deadly year for COVID yet.

Canada annual reported Covid Deaths (16,096 in 2020; 14,110 in 2021; 18,831 in 2022)

Dr. Jeff Gilchrist, PhD. An AI Data Scientist who gathers statistics and articles about a variety of topics, including COVID-19.

Twitter

If you know who to follow, Twitter is a good source of information (at least for the time being), though it is a confusing platform for those who don’t use it regularly. This is my Twitter list of sources; here’s another, of women scientists and doctors.

(Of course, Twitter is melting down under its new ownership. Hopefully Covid knowledge will converge on some other website soon.)
